When is Krishna Janmashtami in 2018?
Janmashtami is a Hindu festival and a Gazetted holiday in many regions of India this day.
It may be known as Sreekrishna Jayanthi and Sree Krishna Janmastami in some regions. According to the Hindu calendar, Janmashtami is celebrated on the Ashtami (eighth day) of Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the month of Shravana or Bhadra. It is believed that Krishna was 8th avatar of the Lord Vishnu. Lord Krishna is known by around 108 names like Govinda, Balgopal, Kanha, Gopal, etc .
How is the Krishna Janamashtami Celebrated ?
The highlight of the festival, which takes place on the second day especially in Mumbai, is the Dahi Handi. This is where clay pots containing butter, curd, and money are strung up high from buildings and young Govindas form a human pyramid and compete with each other to reach the pots and break them open. This celebration represents Lord Krishna’s love for butter and curd, which were the foods he most often enjoyed eating.
